Description
Oak Cottages is a terrace of five former mill workers' cottages, originally built around 1820 for Samuel Greg. The cottages were part of a larger group of seven but now consist of Nos 8, 10, 11, 13, and 14, incorporating the former Nos 9 and 12. The cottages are constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond and feature a Welsh slate roof along with seven brick chimneys.
The structure is two stories high, with a rectangular block design that has an east front of 14 bays. The windows are restored iron small-pane casements arranged in pairs, set under cambered brick heads. There are also board doors, which are accessed by flights of four stone steps with wrought iron balusters. Three of the doors are sheltered by hoods—one gabled and two lean-to—supported by wooden brackets. Small-pane windows provide light to the basement. This terrace represents the second phase of the development of the industrial village.
