Description
The Caretaker's House at the Ruskin School, also known as the Caretaker's House at Ruskin Road School, was built in 1909 by H Beswick, the County Architect. This two-storey building features red brick with paler brick bands and terra cotta dressings, topped with a Westmorland slate roof. The gables have roughcast panels and the house is arranged in three bays across the front.
The windows are primarily original glazing bar sashes, which include keystones. The front facade has a central projecting gable with a part-glazed door to the left, set under a round arch with a keystone and a blank fanlight above. There is a central round arched window above the door, and to the right, a single sash window. The left side of the house has two sashes on each floor. The rear features a central sash window, with another sash located in a through-eaves dormer above. To the right, there is a projecting stack, and to the left, a single sash window along with a side wall stack.
Attached to the house are outbuildings that include toilets and storage areas, which have hipped ventilators and lean-to roofs. These outbuildings are enclosed by a wall with terra cotta coping.
Inside, the layout is plain, with two rooms combined, an original staircase featuring turned balusters, and several original five-panel doors.
