SK3486NE CAVENDISH STREET 784-1/29/153 (West side) Caretaker's House to Springfield Junior and Infant Schools

Caretaker's house. c1877, with late C20 alterations. Probably by Innocent & Brown for the Sheffield School Board. Rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and gabled and hipped slate roofs with large rear gable stack. Plinth and coped gables. 2 storeys plus garrets; 2 window range. Front, to playground, has to left a cross casement and to right, a smaller casement with incised lintel, on a sillband. Above, a larger cross casement to the garret. Below, a smaller casement, flanked to right by a door with overlight. Left return has a cross casement to the ground floor. All these windows have late C20 glazing. INTERIOR not inspected. A number of caretakers' houses of similar design were added to board schools in 1877-78. An ancillary building to Springfield Junior and Infant Schools (qv).
