Description
This is a house located at 17 Handsworth New Road, built in 1901 by Buckland and Farmer for the Birmingham School Board. It was designed as a master's or caretaker's house for the nearby Handsworth New Road School. The house is in the Arts and Crafts style and constructed of red brick, featuring a central brick chimney. The slate roof has timber bracketed eaves and an asymmetrical pitch, being lower at the rear. It includes a southern hipped section with wide flat eaves, which were once supported by iron brackets, while the pitched section has timber bracketed eaves.
The house has timber casement windows, although several have been replaced. It consists of two storeys with an attic. The east elevation, facing the street, has two bays with windows at different levels. The southern bay features a canted bay window on the ground floor and horizontal windows above, topped by the hipped roof. The narrow northern bay is recessed and contains a small low window with a transomed staircase window above.
On the north elevation, there is scattered fenestration and an entrance with a flat lead-covered porch canopy, which is suspended on decorative iron brackets, providing shelter for the doorway, which has an attached window. The door has been replaced. To the west, there are two lower sections that have undergone some alterations.
Additionally, there are subsidiary features including a detached shed and WCs to the west, which still have their original boarded doors.
