Description
All Saints Hospital is a former borough lunatic asylum, built in 1849 by D R Hill. The building is constructed of red brick with blue brick patterns around the entrance and forming a band on the first floor. It features stone dressings and mullions, with slated roofs behind stone balustrades and Dutch gables over the projecting bays, all designed in a Tudor style.
The hospital has a symmetrical design consisting of a three-storey central block with five windows, flanked by two-storey blocks with three windows and terminating in three-storey blocks with three windows. The central entrance is Tudor-arched and stone-cased, approached by steps, and features a doorway with two-leaf linen-fold panelled wooden doors flanked by windows. Above the entrance is a ribband inscribed "Erected Anno. Domini MDCCCXLIX" and a carved heraldic shield. The first floor chapel is highlighted by a double-height oriel window, flanked by two-light transom and mullion windows, with three-light windows in the outer bays. The gables contain blank stone shields set in lugged rectangular recesses and are topped with urn finials. The recessed bays have subsidiary part-glazed, Tudor-arched entrances also approached by steps.
Inside, the interior is plain, with the chapel featuring an open queen strut truss roof and later stained glass. Hill was known for designing many institutional buildings in the mid-19th century, and this asylum was part of a civic group that included the contemporary Winson Green Prison.
The asylum underwent extensions from 1851 to 1878 and additional work in the 20th century, but these extensions are not considered of special interest.
