Description
Bishop Latimer Memorial Church of All Saints, built between 1903 and 1904, was designed by architect W H Bidlake. This large church resembles the East Anglian Perpendicular wool churches and showcases Bidlake's meticulous attention to detail through its high-quality use of stone and brick. The exterior features pale red brick with stone dressings and intricately handled perpendicular tracery. It includes aisles, a lofty clerestory above the nave, a crossing, and an impressive north-west tower with a pierced parapet.
Inside, the church utilizes buff brick alongside stonework for the arcades, creating a monochrome effect. However, fresco work over the southeast arch of the south arcade suggests plans for a more extensive decorative scheme. The interior features a six-bay lofty arcade with clustered piers and a unique clerestory design, where the two-light windows are slightly cantilevered, supported by a free-standing central shaft. The apsidal chancel has a brick-infilled lierne vault. In the west end's south corner, there is an immersion font with a simple wrought iron ground rail. The nave is topped with a waggon roof that includes alternate hammer beam trusses.
