Description

The Tower of Christ Church is a church tower built in 1877 by engineer J W Stansby. It is made of yellow sandstone and is square in shape, connecting to the mainly brick outer walls of the church, which was originally constructed in 1843 by John Cunningham. The church's roof was removed and the interior was gutted in 1978. The tower features coursed rock-faced rubble masonry and has reducing angle buttresses.

The west door is designed in a gothic style, with a chevron pattern and is flanked by single shafts, topped with a hood mould that has stops carved as faces. Above the entrance, there is a large window with geometrical tracery. The windows on the north and south sides are arranged at two levels, set within partly blind arcades formed by shafts, with lancet windows at the lower level and trefoil-headed windows above.

The tower has clock dials on all four sides, set within flat diaper panels made of square carved masonry blocks. At the bell stage, there are treble louvred lancets divided by coupled shafts with rings. The corners of the tower are adorned with octagonal pinnacles that have shafts and lancet sinkings, which flank a stepped and crocketted gabled parapet.
