Description

The Lyceum Theatre, originally known as Crewe Theatre, is a theatre built in 1887 and substantially rebuilt in 1910 by Albert Winstanley. It features Accrington type red bricks and a slate roof, with a three-storey, five-bay gabled facade. An adjoining two-storey, four-bay section of red brick forms the offices to the east. The main entrance has four pairs of bolection-moulded two-panel doors leading to the auditorium, along with two and a half pairs of glazed doors to the east wing foyer. The gabled facade is divided vertically by brick pilasters of varying widths, starting at the first floor level with a terra cotta string course. The windows are primarily sash types, featuring moulded terra cotta sills and keystones, arranged in groups of three on the outer bays and single on the second and fourth bays. The centre bay has a pair of sashes at the first floor level with a wide lunette window above. An eaves level string course runs across the three centre bays, and the gable apex has a large sunken plastered lunette panel inscribed with "Lyceum Theatre" and the date. The east wing has sashes with moulded reveals, stone sills, and heads in Caernarvon style, topped with a moulded modillion cornice. Inside, the auditorium features a dress circle, gallery, and boxes, all fronted by richly moulded plasterwork that includes cartouches and reclining figures. The proscenium arch and large ceiling rose also showcase high-quality plasterwork.
