Description

No. 47 Delamere Street is a former railway manager's house, built around 1850, which has since become a private dwelling and is now a convent for a small community of nuns. The building is constructed of red and brown brick with a slate roof and features two storeys and an attic across three bays.

A notable feature is the projecting single-storey flat-roofed timber entrance porch, which has square outer posts, half wall posts, and an arched entrance beneath an arch slotted fillet cornice. The porch contains a four-panel half-glazed door with wing lights and a rectangular transom light.

On the northeast gable, there are a pair of recessed sash windows with corbel-supported projecting sills and metal window box rails. Above these, a square five-sash oriel window is supported by numerous brackets and features stained glass transom lights and an overhanging hipped roof, flanked by short gable barge boards.

The western part of the facade is made of brown brick with blue bands and includes a hexagonal bay window with a stone sill and head, sashes, and a flat roof with a low ornamental edge rail. The first-floor sashes have Caernarvon heads topped with gothic arches and drip moulds, which contain panels with a foliage motif. The attic features a gothic-headed window with stone springers and a keystone. The west gable apex displays an elaborate stepped corbel treatment. This building is included partly for its historic interest as a London and North Western Railway (LNWR) structure.
