Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church built between 1914 and 1923 by architects J Brooke and C E Elcock. It is constructed from red sandstone ashlar and features a green slate roof. The church has a three-bay nave with side gables that contain leaded light windows in the Perpendicular style, along with lancet windows adorned with stained glass. There are hood moulds above the windows and inter-window reducing buttresses. The west nave entrance includes twin doors leading into the baptistery, featuring double multi-panelled doors under gothic arches that transition into splayed reveals formed by clasping buttresses. The eaves gutter is supported by a simple bevelled cornice, and the gable copings are topped with a twin bell cote and a cross finial.

Inside, a short arcade of two arches creates narrow side aisles that lead from the baptistery into the nave, which is defined by three large arches that die into the piers and wider side aisles. The chancel, which has two bays, is flanked by the organ chamber to the north and the vestry to the south. Notable interior features include a carved oak reredos with a "Last Supper" motif, a projecting cornice, and linenfold panelling. The chancel also contains one-level sedilia and choir stalls. A carved oak pulpit is present, and the walls are plastered. The ceilings are made of polished hardwood with barrel shapes and shaped ribs supported by stone corbels.
