Description
The Bath House is a late 16th-century farmhouse. It is timber-framed with plaster and brick nogging, and has a tile roof. The building is two storeys high, with a three-window front and a three-bay return on the north side. It has a high sandstone plinth. The timber frame features close studding with rails to the windows, and angle braces. The west gable is jettied at first floor and apex. A large sandstone stack is located towards the rear (south), featuring diagonally set flues. The windows are flush casements with glazing bars, with a French window on the east (garden) front. The west gable has timberwork in a chevron pattern, incorporating struts from a king post and three struts from the tie beam on each side. A similar arrangement has been painted on the plastered apex of the east gable. There is a gable end stack on the north wing. The boarded entrance door is positioned in the northwest angle.
Inside, the ground floor rooms feature heavy ovolo moulded beams and square section joists. Original boarded doors remain, along with a Georgian cast iron mantel. At first floor, two oak Elizabethan six-panel doors are fitted with "H" hinges, retaining remnants of older wrought hinges, latches, and an oak cased lock. Wide oak flooring is present, along with a wide oak staircase that has a turned newel and a single 75mm turned baluster per tread, fixed between timber framed internal walls. The roof structure includes a truss with a curved tie beam and two posts, and wide ceiling joists. The house is believed to have been used to accommodate visitors to a salt spring located in a nearby field.
