Description

The Entrance Lodge, located south-east of Peckforton Castle, was built in the mid-19th century by the architect Salvin. It features a combination of red brick and stone with a tiled roof and stands two storeys tall. The lodge includes a turret, an archway, and three bays. The stonework is rock-faced with smooth dressings. The main arch of the gateway is designed in a Gothic style, recessed and flanked by shallower arches and ribs. It is fitted with a pair of flat-topped oak gates on ornamental strap hinges, divided into vertical panels, one of which has a small wicket-door. The archway is ovolo moulded and is accompanied by a round tower with a conical roof, which sits atop a square base on the south side, while a large reducing buttress is located on the north side.

Above the archway, there are two-light trefoil-headed windows on the east and west sides, with the inscription "Confido conquiesco" positioned beneath the window on the rear (west) side of the opening. The lodge itself has shouldered-linteled metal casements in pairs on the ground floor, and trefoil-headed casements in stone half dormers at the end bays on the first floor. The centre bay on the first floor also features shouldered lintels. The north gable and dormers are adorned with copings that have fillet-moulded kneelers and gablet finials. A stone chimney, reduced at the ridge level, has a slotted fillet cap. The doors leading from the archway to the round tower and lodge are studded oak, hung on ornamental strap hinges, with heads fitted to shouldered lintels. Inside, the doors in the lodge entrance porch are boarded and also studded with ornamental strap hinges.
