Description
The gates and railings to Middlewich Cemetery, likely dating from 1859, were made by Button of Crewe and are constructed from cast iron set on a stone plinth. The recessed gateway features a central pair of carriage gates, canted side screens, and a pedestrian gate on each side, with quadrant wings leading to straight railings at the front of the cemetery. The structure includes square iron openwork piers topped with ornate finials, and the panels are decorated with quatrefoils, fleurs-de-lys, arrows, and cusping. This is a rare example from its period that has survived the removal of ironwork for steelmaking during the Second World War. It is included for its group value.
