Description
The Mortuary Chapels Archway and Spire in Middlewich Cemetery, built in 1859 by Bellamy and Hardy, consist of a pair of parallel cemetery chapels connected by an archway featuring a spire. Constructed from yellow stone in small coursed rock-faced blocks with ashlar dressings, the chapels have graded grey slate roofs and display details in the 13th-century style. The central archway is topped with a pinnacled ogee arch that supports a tower with diagonal buttresses and a broach spire. Each chapel has a shoulder-arched doorway beneath the central archway, with a gabled porch on the outer side of each. The front gables feature a 3-light Geometrical window, while each rear gable has a 2-light window. The chapels are adorned with pinnacles and ornate stone openwork cresting on the front gables, making them a striking landmark. The interiors have not been inspected.
