Description

No. 10 Hightown is a butcher's shop that was likely built in 1928, as indicated by dated tile panels. The building features a red brick structure with a facade and interior decorated in white, brown, and cream glazed tiles, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It is a single-storey, double-fronted shop with a small store-room wing at the rear.

The symmetrical facade includes a central, glazed double door with an overlight that displays the name 'Vernons'. The splayed door reveals and the flanking shop fronts are fully-glazed above tiled panels that read 'MEAT PURVEYORS'. The end pilasters are adorned with geometrical panels and twin consoles, supporting a continuous cornice that breaks forward, although the frieze is obscured by a later signboard. The parapet features end dies with rams' heads in relief, and a central segmental pediment with a tympanum showcasing a relief bull's head in a roundel, flanked by spandrels with floral motifs.

On the left side of the building, there is a panelled double-door with a 4-pane overlight, and the brick gable wall has a corbelled verge and an apex finial.

Inside, the shop is fully tiled, with brown skirting, a dado rail, and a frieze panel decorated with swags and ribbons. It retains original meat-hanging rails. Opposite the front door is a cash office, and to the left is a painted-tile panel in an architrave depicting cattle in a rural scene; to the right is a similar scene featuring sheep. The left side of the shop has two matching scenes with pigs, while the right side displays an elongated panel with sheep, flanked by panels featuring cattle. The painted panels are signed 'S Bagshaw 1928'. This building is a rare unaltered survival.
