Description
The Big Lock and Footbridge on the Trent and Mersey Canal in Middlewich is a canal lock built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of blue brick with red sandstone plinths and copings. The lock features double gates, with the upper pair made of timber and the lower pair replaced with steel. There is an iron footbridge, likely built in the later 19th century, which has a path made of cambered iron plates. The blue brick abutments and path ramps support the structure. The lock is approximately 5 metres wide, a size established in 1776 when it was planned for Middlewich to serve as the trans-shipment point between "Mersey flats" and narrowboats.
