Description

Canal Bridge Number 26 is a canal bridge built around 1800 by B. Outram for the Peak Forest Canal Company. It is constructed from coursed, squared sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings. The bridge features a single elliptical arch, with coping at road level and a plain parapet that extends into four short, curving wing walls, each ending with square pilasters. The walls and parapets are topped with rounded coping. There are stone steps leading from the towpath to the road at the north-east corner. Canal bridges Numbers 23 and 27 are almost identical to this one.
