Description
The canal fence posts, dating from around 1840, are situated alongside the Macclesfield Canal. They are made from local sandstone and are located on the outside edge of the towpath on the north-west side of the canal, on a raised embankment section approximately midway between bridge number 20 and bridge number 19.
There are 73 visible posts, which are roughly-hewn, tapered slabs standing about 1 to 1.5 metres high, each featuring two railing slots. While a few posts show damage at the top, most remain intact. The posts are evenly spaced, although some are missing from the line, and many are now connected by barbed wire. The area around the posts is heavily overgrown with vegetation.
