Description

Keepers Cottage is a cottage and shippon likely dating to the 16th century, with substantial fabric from the late 17th century and subsequent alterations. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with a Kerridge stone-slate roof, a stone ridge, one brick chimney, and a large, stepped stone gable chimney. The south front has two storeys and five bays. The right-end bay features a two-light wooden casement with the remains of a hood mould. Beside it is a lean-to porch with a heavy, flagged roof and a doorcase with a chamfered lintel. The remaining windows are two- or three-light wooden casements. There is a door to the shippon at the left end, above which is a square pitch hole.

The interior contains heavily chamfered ceiling beams, some of which are boxed in. A good iron range is set within a large chimney breast, which contains hidden timber framing within the gable wall. An early Victorian fireplace in the parlour has freemason's symbols and a cast iron grate. Original three-board doors are also present. The cottage served as the gamekeeper’s residence for Styperson Park.
