Macclesfield Canal, Bosley Lock Number 6 And Lock Pound At Sj 9049 6607

Bosley Lock Number 6 and its lock pound were built around 1831, designed by engineer William Crosley. The lock features rusticated gritstone, while the spillway is made of ashlar. The upper end of the lock basin is semi-circular, and there is a two-tier quadrant platform located to the west of the lock's tail gates, with a flight of stone steps to the east. A cambered footbridge made of cast iron crosses the lock tail (entrance) and has a later addition of plain tubular steel railings. The head and tail gates are equipped with steel balance beams; the head gate has ground-mounted paddle gearing, while the tail gate features gate-mounted gearing, both using rack and pinion mechanisms. Some areas of the platforms have been concreted, and a ladder has been inserted into the lock chamber.
