Description
The lychgate at Aston Burial Ground is a war memorial built around 1919. It features a timber frame set on a brick base and has a slate roof. The side walls include double gates, and the road-facing front has corner posts with a cross section. The jowled tops of the posts are inscribed with "1914" on the left and "1918" on the right, supporting a cambered tie-beam that reads "IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN HEROES OF THE GREAT WAR." Above are S-shaped braces and decorated bargeboards.
On the rear, there is a similar design, with a bressumer inscribed "UNRIGHTEOUS TO FORGET" and the inner face bearing the inscription "THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE." Inside, on the left and right above the brick side walls, are wooden tablets. The left tablet is inscribed with "BROOMHALL/SOUND/NEWHALL/SMEETON" followed by a list of 13 names. The right tablet reads "REMEMBRANCE/DUTY/PATRIOTISM/TRUTH/FREEDOM/FAITH/SACRIFICE/LOVE/IMMORTALITY." The lower brick walls have stone quoins at the rear, and the top features a chamfered coping.
