Description

The War Memorial in Queen's Park is a South African War Memorial built in 1904. It is made of grey marble with a yellow sandstone cap and features a bronze figure. The memorial has a square moulded base and a chamfered plinth with recessed corners. There are bronze plaques on all four faces, topped by a bowtell pediment. The north-facing pediment displays the former arms of the Borough along with the motto "Never Behind" and the dates 1899-1902. Atop the memorial is a square tapering marble column with a sandstone Ionic cap that supports a near full-sized statue of a soldier, who is holding a rifle and dressed in the uniform of the period.
