Description
The South African War Memorial, located opposite number 2 on Front Street in Tynemouth, was erected in 1902. It is constructed from red sandstone ashlar and features bronze plaques. The memorial is accessed by three square steps leading to a square plinth, which has diagonal buttresses and a cornice. Above this, there is a square pedestal supported by diagonal consoles. The upper section of the memorial is octagonal and curved but is currently missing. The panels on the west and south sides honor the men of Tynemouth who died in South Africa between 1899 and 1903. The memorial was funded through public subscription.
