Description

Dudley Boer War Memorial is situated prominently on the north side of Dudley cemetery, overlooking Stourbridge Road. Built in the early 20th century, it commemorates the borough's soldiers who died in the South African campaign.

The memorial consists of a three-stage base constructed from red and grey granite. The base features fluted black granite Ionic reeded pilasters in each corner. Rising from the granite plinth is a red granite pedestal that supports a sculpture of a soldier, carved from Sicilian marble, holding a rifle with a fixed bayonet, while a wounded bugler lies at his feet. The rifle is constructed from Portland stone. Around the pedestal is a raised inscription naming the territories of Transvaal, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Natal.

Below the inscription, the pediment faces are carved with crossed rifles and a British Colonial pattern helmet. Below the pediment are dentils and a frieze of garland swags, followed by an inscription quoting "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.”

The front face of the red granite plinth features a low-relief carving of the Borough Arms, below which is the dedicatory inscription "ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN MEMORY OF SOLDIERS OF THIS BOROUGH WHO FELL IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN.” The remaining faces of the plinth list the names of the 56 men of the borough who died in the war, including those who succumbed to wounds or sickness.

The upper stage of the base displays the years 1899-1902 on each face, while the middle stage has a carved wreath in low relief on each face. The lowest stage of the base is moulded and rusticated. The memorial is enclosed by a stone kerb with eight low, moulded pillars.
