Description

The Webster tomb, located 210 meters west of the South-East Lodge in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, is a column gravestone with kerbstones dating from around 1890. It was created by Bower & Florence of Aberdeen in memory of Christopher Maling Webster, who lived from 1813 to 1890, and other family members. The tomb is made of red granite and features bronze letters. The kerb has a trefoil moulding and trefoil-gabled dwarf piers that enclose a large rectangular area with a square projection on the west side. In this projection stands a high column that is symbolically broken, with a segmental cornice atop a square pedestal. At the base of the pedestal, there is a carved high-relief anchor and rope. A long inscription on the pedestal lists the names of the Webster family. Notably, the first mechanical rope-making works were established in Sunderland around 1793 by an earlier member of the Webster family.
