Description
The walls, piers, gates, and railings south of Ryhope Pumping Station were built around 1870 as the original entrance to the water pumping station. They are constructed of header-bond brick and ashlar, featuring ashlar piers and wrought-iron gates and railings. The low serpentine walls, which have chamfered ashlar coping, flank the gateway and end in four panelled ashlar piers, each with a plinth, cornice, and obelisk finial. The ornamental gates are cross-braced and include dog bars, while the similar railings on the walls are ramped to the gate piers. The main entrance to the site has since been moved to the west of the superintendent's house.
