Description
The gate piers and gates located north of Stonygate Pumping Station were built in 1890, likely designed by J.E. Wolfe, who was the resident engineer for the Sunderland and South Shields Water Company. There are three gate piers made of brick that are rendered to resemble stone, featuring terracotta elements. Each pier has a plinth and deeply rusticated bands of rendered brick that alternate with terracotta strings. They also have moulded cornices and round-topped square-section finials made of terracotta. The gates consist of cast iron, with the lower panels decorated with designs of water-leaf, seed pod, and spiky flowers, accommodating both vehicles and pedestrians.
