Description

The engine house, built in 1890 by J.E. Wolfe, who was the resident engineer for the Sunderland and South Shields Water Company, is located to the east of the pumping station in Houghton-le-Spring. It is a single-storey structure made of brick, featuring three bays. The central door is flanked by round-headed windows set within brick panels, and it has a plinth with sloping terracotta cills. The hipped roof is adorned with clove-shaped terracotta finials. Additionally, there is brick housing for the shaft extending from the west elevation to the mound of the pumping station.
