Description

This pillbox, constructed of reinforced concrete between 1940 and 1941, is one of a pair located on a former inland stop-line. It stands approximately 0.9km north of a related pillbox and both are situated on a line designed to protect the western hinterland of Sunderland in the event of an east coast invasion. The pillbox is a single-story structure, partly below ground level, with an elongated hexagonal plan and a flat roof. The elongated front has a central machine gun embrasure flanked by single rifle embrasures, with a further machine gun embrasure on each chamfered side. The rear front features a protected doorway and two rifle embrasures to one side, and one to the other, with rifle and machine gun embrasures on each chamfered side. Inside, a thick detached blast wall is positioned centrally. Below each machine gun embrasure is a roughly square hole, formerly accommodating a machine gun mount. The pillbox was built into the side of a former quarry, which had earlier been used as a miniature rifle range. From 1940 to 1942, inland defence relied on anti-tank stop-lines, incorporating features like pillboxes, ditches, and barbed wire. While the War Office produced standard designs, many pillboxes reflected local choices and circumstances. This example represents a rare, regionally specific type of pillbox, possessing group value alongside the nearby pillbox, and illustrating the strategic approach to anti-invasion defences protecting an important industrial town during the Second World War. It is well-preserved and its form clearly demonstrates its intended defensive purpose.
