Description
The National Coal Board Workshops, specifically the underground battery locomotive shop, was built around 1882 for the Lambton Colliery Company. This workshop is constructed of brick and features a roof made of corrugated asbestos. It has one high storey and consists of seven bays.
On the south elevation, there are seven full-height buttresses, although there is none at the right corner. The central round-headed entrance has been bricked up, and there are tall round-headed windows, which have had their heads bricked up with modern casements inserted. Below these are smaller round-headed windows with metal glazing bars, and all the arches are made of triple rows of gauged brick. The roof is hipped. The building is included partly for its group value.
