Description
The National Coal Board Workshops, specifically the machine shop and surface locomotive shop, were built in 1882 for the Lambton Colliery Company. The structure features brick construction with quoins and a Welsh slate roof that has stone copings, a roll-moulded apex, and curved kneelers. It is a double span building with one tall storey and has a four-window end. The building consists of two sections, one with nine bays and the other with four bays.
At the west end, there are two brick-panelled gabled bays that contain two sliding vehicle doors, one of which is modern, and a double door located under a round gauged brick arch. Similar arches are found above four tall fixed windows, which include glazing bars and pivoted lights. A clock face is positioned centrally on the left, with a flagpole on the right, and a datestone is placed between the gables. The return side features similar windows, with an upper row in the second section.
A hexagonal roof vent is present, featuring louvred elliptical-headed openings and an ogee lead cupola topped with a ball and spear finial. Inside, there is a fish-bellied crane located in the northern block and a balcony at the east end.
