Description

The National Coal Board Workshops Office Block, built around 1882 for the Lambton Colliery Company, is a single-storey office building located on Philadelphia Lane in Houghton-le-Spring. Constructed from brick with stone dressings, it features a Welsh slate roof and consists of seven bays arranged in two sections, with six bays in the first section and one bay in the second.

The third bay has a glazed double door beneath a margined rectangular fanlight, framed by a raised surround with bracketed cornices on either side. The fourth bay includes a projecting bay with sash windows, while the other windows are elliptical-headed sashes with glazing bars, set under gauged brick arches adorned with ram's-head keyblocks and featuring projecting stone cills. A similar window can be found in the second section on the left. The hipped roof is finished with red ridge tiles and has three transverse ridge chimneys, two of which on the left are truncated.
