Description

The structure consists of a wall, gates, and railings surrounding a former graveyard and chapel, which is now used as a rent office. This site dates back to around 1827 and has undergone some repairs. The graveyard wall is made of limestone rubble with a brick coping, while the lower wall adjacent to the former chapel features ashlar coping and piers at both ends and at the main gates. The wrought-iron railings and gates complement the overall design. The graveyard wall extends around the west, north, east, and southeast sides of the grass area north of the former chapel, constructed with irregular courses and topped with gabled brick coping. A high wall continues from the east extension of the chapel around the southeast corner, featuring stepped pyramidal ashlar coping at the corner and junction with the lower wall. There are three square piers located to the west and south of the former chapel; the western pier is made of rusticated ashlar, while the gate piers to the south are constructed of coursed squared stone, all topped with stepped pyramidal ashlar coping. A lower wall connects these piers and joins the high wall at the southeast, incorporating wrought-iron railings and cast-iron principals, with a gate interrupting the wall at the southwest. A plaque affixed to the north wall of the former chapel states, "This open space forms part of the churchyard of the Parish of St Paul's Ryhope and was used for burials 1827 to 1861."
