Description
The war memorial at the west end of The Green in Ryhope commemorates those who served in the Great War and World War II. It was constructed around 1920 using ashlar and bronze materials. The memorial features an octagonal stepped base that supports a high, panelled, corniced plinth topped with a tall, tapered, chamfered cross, which has a low relief cross and leaves.
On the east face of the base, there is a long inscription made up of individual bronze letters, although some letters have been removed. A plaque on the north side honors an airman who received a posthumous Victoria Cross for avoiding Ryhope during a crash landing. The west face of the base displays the words "PRO PATRIA GREAT WAR 1914-1918" in large letters. Additionally, there are eight panels on the plinth, each listing about 50 names of those who served in World War I.
