Description

The cooling ponds to the north and south and the reservoir to the east of Ryhope Pumping Station were built between 1866 and 1870 by T. Hawksley for the Sunderland and South Shields Water Company. These structures feature rock-faced snecked stone walls with ashlar coping. The two small cooling ponds, which have shaped corners, are located to the north and south of the engine house, with walls that slope back towards the coping. The large reservoir spans the width of the site to the east of the engine house, but it is currently covered and grassed over, with gauges set into a concrete platform in the turf.
