Description
The Superintendent's House, located south-west of Ryhope Pumping Station, was built around 1869 and is possibly designed by Hawksley. This two-storey brick building features ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has stone gable copings and brick chimneys. The house is laid out in an L-plan with a projecting cross-wing. The main front has three windows and a renewed central door set within a corniced stone surround. All windows have stone mullions and transoms, including a canted bay with a lead-covered hipped roof featuring a two-light window and a slit in the gable peak of the right cross-wing. To the left, there is a four-light window with a three-light window above it. The steeply-pitched roof has gables with shaped kneelers and tall corniced chimneys. The building is included for its group value.
