Description
The Superintendent’s House, now a lodge, was built in 1913 and later altered. It was designed by Edward Cratney of Newcastle. The building is constructed from coursed grey/blue granite with ashlar dressings, and has Westmorland slate roofs with coped gables and kneelers. Two external gable stacks are present.
The two-storey south front features a central double-canted arched doorway with an original, high-quality oak door. Single, three-light casement windows are positioned on either side of the doorway. Above, a central clock is set within a square stone surround, with the date 'A D 1913' inscribed in the spandrels. Single, through-eaves dormer windows, each with its own stone gable and a late 20th-century casement window, are located on either side.
The building is an important element of the cemetery’s overall architectural character and is included on the list for its group value.
