Description
This monument, located 6 metres south-west of the Church of Holy Trinity, commemorates 42 miners who lost their lives in a colliery accident on 2 March 1885. It was created by Emley and Sons of Newcastle and erected by the miners of Usworth Colliery. The memorial is made of painted stone and features a square corniced plinth that is inscribed with the names of the miners buried here and at the Church of Our Blessed Lady Immaculate in Washington, set on two stone steps. The tapered octagonal shaft is decorated with incised flowers and has low relief gablets at its base, topped with a cross finial.
