Description
The Church of Holy Trinity is a parish church built in 1832 by John and Benjamin Green of Newcastle. It underwent alterations in 1882-1883, which included the addition of transepts by Austin and Johnson of Newcastle, and further work in 1902 when Hicks and Charlewood of Newcastle added the chancel and vestry. A bell-tower was added in 1962. The church features a four-bay nave with a small crenellated west tower topped by a spirelet, a west porch, and north and south transepts. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with an ashlar plinth and dressings, and has a Westmorland slate roof, while the porch roof is made of Welsh slate. The church is designed in the Early English style. Inside, there is a choir gallery at the west end. The church is prominently situated on a high mound, where a medieval church once stood before it was demolished in the early 19th century.
