Description
Washington Old Hall is a Grade I listed house dating from the early 17th century, which incorporates parts of a medieval structure. The east wing was altered in 1792, and restoration work began in 1937. The building is constructed from coursed sandstone blocks and features a roof of pantiles with flat stone gable coping. It has an H-plan layout with a rear central wing and stands two storeys high with five windows.
On the north elevation, there is a central door set in a flattened Tudor arch with alternate block jambs. The ground floor windows are four-light, while the first-floor windows are three-light, all featuring stone mullions. There is a blank bay above the door, and both the windows and door have label moulds. A transverse ridge chimney is located on the left wing, and a massive chimney stack on the right return has three offsets.
Inside, there are two pointed arches for service doors that spring from a shared pillar in the wall between the west wing and the great hall. The west wall features an elliptical-headed chamfered fireplace. The east wing contains oak panelling from the Old Manor House in Abbotts Langley, while the south wing has a staircase from the White Hart Hotel in Guildford.
