Description
Usworth Hall, located in Washington, is a late 18th-century house originally built for Bernard Shaw. Constructed of sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, the building has a U-shaped plan and stands two storeys high with five windows. The south elevation features a central double door with five panels set in an open Tuscan porch that has a fluted frieze. There are decorative bands, an eaves cornice, and an open pediment above the central three windows. The sash windows have plain reveals and lack glazing bars, while a round window is situated in the pediment. The hipped roof is topped with two transverse yellow brick chimneys. Inside, the staircase has been altered, but the dado remains, and two arched openings have been created in the wall between the hall and the principal room.
