Description

The Eighton Banks War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921 by D Morrison, with an addition for the Second World War.

It features a sandstone Celtic wheel cross mounted on a stone pedestal, which is set on an ashlar plinth raised on a three-stepped base. The memorial is enclosed within a square-plan concrete podium, surrounded by low diamond-set iron bar railings supported by stone posts with pyramidal tops. The cross arms display an anchor, a heart, a Latin cross, and a Moline cross, all carved in relief in recessed panels, with chain-link carving around the ring. The shaft of the cross has recessed panels on all four sides, decorated with crosses on the upper panels, the inscription "PRO/ PATRIA" on the central panels, and laurel wreathes carved in relief on the lower panels.

The moulded base of the shaft rests on a plinth with angled scroll corner brackets set upon angled rock-faced quoins. The recessed areas between the quoins have ashlar sills that form drip moulds over polished granite tablets, each inscribed with the names of the Fallen in gilded lettering, listing the rank, name, and regiment or service of each individual. The last three names on the north tablet were added later, with the final name carved into the panel below the granite tablet.

An original dedication tablet for the 1914 - 1918 conflict is attached to the east face of the plinth, stating: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR FOR HONOUR AND FREEDOM./ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN/ LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." A similar dedication panel for the Second World War is attached to the west face of the plinth, reading: "IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945/ 'WE WILL REMEMBER THEM'."
