Description

The Church of St John in Gateshead Fell was built in 1825 by Ions, who was a builder working for John Green but acted as the architect for this project. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and features a low-pitched Welsh slate roof. It has a west tower topped with a very tall stone spire, serving as a landmark for both land and sea. The design is a simple Gothick style with a very short chancel and lancet windows. The tower is centrally located on the three-bay west front and is supported by diagonal buttresses and battlements. There are three pairs of cusped lancets with quatrefoil spandrels and hoodmoulds.
