Description
Lloyd's Bank, built around 1840 by Thomas Oliver, is a two-storey building located on Durham Road. It is constructed of dressed stone and features a Welsh slate roof with corniced stone end chimneys. The building has four windows on the first floor, which are eight-pane sashes, and two double casements below. These flank a studded door that is topped by an oblong fanlight and accessed by six stone steps with cast iron handrails. The eaves cornice is supported by stone brackets, and there are hoodmoulds over the upper windows. A raised band runs above the ground floor windows, and the building stands on a high plinth. Historically, it was built as a reading room for the miners of Low Fell, funded by local subscriptions.
