Description
Winney House Hospital is a grand Italianate villa built in 1864 and later. It is constructed of narrowly coursed ashlar with rusticated quoins, featuring a roll moulded plinth and eaves entablature. The building has a low pitched hipped slate roof supported by deep paired brackets. The main block is two storeys tall, with slightly later south extensions that use similar materials but are plainer in design.
On the garden front, there is a prominent four-storey tower with thick rusticated quoins, a first-floor entablature, deep bracketed eaves, and a pyramidal roof topped with a lead pinnacle. This front has three wide bays connected to the tower by a narrow link, along with extensions beyond. The entrance front consists of five bays and features a large central prostyle porch with paired columns and a balustraded balcony above. Although many windows have been modernised, they remain in their original openings, with some displaying classical architraves and roll moulded reveals. The villa was originally built as a residence for Edward Joicey, a coal owner. There are also modern fire escapes and south-west extensions.
