Description
Silksworth Hall is a house that was later used as a hotel, and it was empty at the time of the survey. Built around 1900, it features bright red brick with sandstone ashlar dressings and a graduated slate roof topped with terracotta ridge coping and finials, along with brick chimneys.
The building is two storeys high and has three wide bays in a Jacobean style. The entrance front showcases three prominent gables, with the central bay recessed and featuring an ashlar loggia supported by Ionic pilasters. This loggia has keyed arches on imposts, with balustrades below and above, and a pedimented parapet above the central opening. The name "SILKSWORTH HALL" is inscribed in well-cut letters on the frieze.
On either side of the loggia, there are semicircular projections with high stone-mullioned four-light windows. The eaves string, parapet, and ribbed hemispherical roofs add to the architectural detail. Above the loggia, there are three stone mullioned and transomed windows with alternate-block jambs, the central one featuring a low segmental pediment, and a two-light window sits in the peak of the gable.
The side bays have stepped chimney-stacks that rise above each dome, each with a single window in the upper part, flanked by similar small windows. All gables are adorned with bargeboards; the central gable has a dragon finial, while the side gables have high octagonal chimneys that rise from a corniced plinth and are topped with corniced bands.
The right return of the building has two gabled bays flanking a central triple Jacobean ashlar blind arcade, situated below a two-storey oriel bow window. The rear elevation features full-height projecting canted bays flanking a ground-floor loggia and a first-floor balcony.
