Description

The Silksworth and Tunstall War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1922 by Mr. S Fraser of Grangetown, with additions for the Second World War and Bosnia.

The memorial features a life-size figure of an advancing infantryman, made of white marble, mounted on a granite pedestal and base, with Heworth stone steps. The carved figure depicts a soldier wearing 1908 pattern infantry equipment and a Brodie helmet, holding a raised Lee-Enfield rifle. The figure is supported by a carved pile of stones and stands on a square granite pedestal, which has a foliate carved architrave, on a two-tier plinth, and is set on a two-stepped sandstone base.

The front panel of the pedestal bears the inscription: "THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE SILKSWORTH AND TUNSTALL PARISHES WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The names of 151 fallen soldiers from the First World War are inscribed on all four panels of the pedestal. Additionally, the name of a soldier killed in Bosnia in 1996 has been added at the base of the south-east panel.

The upper tier of the plinth features the inscription: "NOT ONCE BUT TWICE IN OUR ROUGH ISLAND STORY THE PATH OF DUTY WAS THE WAY TO GLORY." The lower tier's south-west panel reads: "ALSO IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF THOSE OF THESE PARISHES WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945." The names of 59 servicemen who died during the Second World War are inscribed on the south-east, north-east, and north-west sides of the lower tier. The north-west side also includes the inscription: "CIVILIANS KILLED BY ENEMY ACTION," listing nine casualties.
