Description
The gates and gate piers at the entrance to Humbledon Pumping Station were built around 1846 by Thomas Hawksley. They are made of ashlar and feature wrought-iron gates. The wide square piers have low pyramidal coping and are plain, except for a deep concave recess on the inner rear corner designed to hold the gates. The gates are adorned with spiral finials on the hinge side uprights, which have shaped projections to support the top rail. A similar projection is present on the central upright, which also features a spear-head finial. Additionally, dog bars rise through the double central rails. The gates were noted to be slightly damaged at the time of the survey.
