Description
Tunstall Hope Lodge is a small villa, likely serving as a lodge for the former Tunstall Hills racecourse, built around 1840. The building features a rendered exterior with painted ashlar dressings and a roof made of graduated Lakeland slates, topped with a painted chimney. Designed in a classical style, it is a single storey structure with two sets of two windows and a lower rear wing that includes a later extension.
Accessed by side steps, the central Tuscan porch has columns and pilasters that exhibit pronounced entasis, adorned with simplified upright acanthus leaves. The entablature displays low-relief swags on the frieze, and the porch contains a six-panelled door along with a segmental cellar arch at its base. The lodge stands on a high plinth that decreases in height as the land rises to the rear, supporting wide angle pilasters with banded rustication. The renewed fixed lights with glazing bars have plain stone surrounds that rise from the plinth, creating aprons beneath the windows.
At the top, there is an entablature, and the low-pitched hipped roof features two round-headed dormers at the front and a similar pair at the rear, both with plain casements. A central wide square chimney is embellished with pilasters and a cornice, topped with tapered square corniced pots.
