Description
Carus Lodge is a picturesque villa dating from the late 1830s. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof and has an irregular plan. The main south-east facing front has five bays. The central bay is gabled and features mullioned and transomed windows; the ground-floor windows are within a canted bay with a pierced parapet. To the right is a recessed gable with a sash window lacking glazing bars, a chamfered surround and hood mould on the first floor. Below this is an arcade with three four-centred arches forming an entrance porch. The left-hand side of the facade has a ground-floor bay with three sash windows lacking glazing bars, topped by a pierced parapet. Above this are two double-chamfered mullioned windows with triangular heads. The eaves parapet rises to form gablets above the windows. Gables have copings, kneelers, and finials at the apex. The chimneys have octagonal caps. To the left of the main lodge are former stables, now incorporated into the house, with two gables facing south-east. The right-hand stable gable is stepped, with a wide double-chamfered four-centred archway on the ground floor, now glazed.
